We are a small, stubbornly curious bunch of people who happen to believe that where you are walking is just as interesting as that you are walking. Whether you’re out for a single day or grinding through twenty, the ground beneath your boots has a story — and someone, somewhere, almost certainly got into a fascinating amount of trouble standing exactly where you’re now standing.
We are travellers, hikers and incurable readers. We devour history, geography, biology and the arts, occasionally all at once, occasionally at the dinner table to the mild dismay of everyone else there. Slow Mule is what happens when that obsession is pointed at a trail and given a microphone.
We create GPS-geofenced audio guides for long-distance walks. The short version: you load a guide, you start walking, and the right story arrives at exactly the right moment — automatically. As you cross an invisible line on the map, your guide triggers. No fumbling for a map pin, no pausing to read a plaque, no guessing whether the thing you’re looking at is the thing the brochure meant. You look up; the landscape explains itself.
The point is immersion. We want your hands free, your eyes on the view, and the past unfolding around you as you move through it.
This is the bit we don’t joke about. Every guide is thoroughly researched and meticulously checked. We chase down primary sources, cross-reference the claims that “everybody knows,” and we’re careful to tell you the difference between documented fact and a good story that history has been too polite to correct. When something is contested, we say so. Getting it right matters to us more than getting it dramatic — though we’d argue the truth is usually more dramatic anyway.
We also try to walk gently. Understanding the environment you’re travelling through — its land, its people, its history — is the whole reason we exist, and we treat the places and cultures in our guides with the respect they’re owed.
A great story deserves great sound. Our audio engineers are quietly fanatical about building soundscapes that put you in the moment — the weather, the footsteps, the distant clamour of something happening just out of sight. The goal is simple: close your eyes for a second and you’re there, then open them and you still are.
We don’t only make guides for independent walkers. We also partner with travel companies who want to immerse their guests in the history they’re moving through — turning a transfer, a walk or a whole itinerary into something their travellers actually remember. Want to know more?
