Nine Centuries, One Hundred Kilometres

This audio journey is a companion for the final hundred kilometres of the Camino Francés — the French Way — from Sarria in Galicia to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. It places you inside the full sweep of the pilgrimage’s history as your feet move through the very landscapes those histories describe. Every fact is real, every named individual lived, and every quoted word was spoken or written.

A Narrator connects the centuries, drawing together the voices of those who walked before you: Aymeric Picaud, the 12th-century French cleric whose Codex Calixtinus is the world’s first travel guide; Master Mateo, the sculptor of the Cathedral’s Pórtico da Gloria; King Alfonso II of Asturias, who walked the first pilgrimage around 830 AD; Saint Francis of Assisi; and modern pilgrim-writers including Paulo Coelho, Shirley MacLaine, Hape Kerkeling and Martin Sheen. Their testimonies span from roughly 830 AD to the present day, surfacing at the places where each of them paused, prayed, built or wrote.

Mule Tips: Earn Your Compostela

Sarria is the most popular starting point on the entire Camino, because 100 km is the minimum walking distance required to receive the Compostela certificate at the Cathedral. Collect your stamps along the way — and listen for the Botafumeiro at journey’s end.
